Love them or hate them, BMW is the king of the fast sedan. They pioneered the category and continue to astound journalists and owners alike with every “M” badge. Even the bizarre choices like the X5M and X6M are amazing to drive in spite of their absurd and pointless existence.
But M cars don’t come cheap, as they always require a hefty premium over the already expensive BMW lineup. Thankfully, the used market allows these cars to drop into the realm of the budget conscious. And now that a new 3 series has been released, a new M3 is forthcoming and bound to drive used prices down even further.
Both of these M3 generations (the E46 & E90) can be found for under $50,000. And great mountain roads can be found for free. This was a good day.

Great review! I was wondering, if the e46 m3 had a standard manual, would you have given the m3 higher reviews? I’m a new recent follower and this episode was one of my favorites!
That was a great review. Aside from the comment about the M button on the e90, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Keep up the good work guys!
Being able to watch the completed episode is a nice x-mas present. Thanks a lot. It’s always a pleasure to see these beautiful sceneries, awesome (and sometimes even affordable) cars in HD and to listen to your straight from the heart comments about machines that make our lives a little bit better. Everyday.
Will you ever do a special episode about your own everyday drivers cars? We know Todd owns a 300ZX (which was tested already) and Paul is a big Audi Fan. But I’d love to see what else you guys driving and why you chose that car over the many others that got full points in your reviews.
Happy holidays from Germany!
Thanks Richard! Appreciate you watching. We’ll send you an email about the S2000.
Always a pleasure watching your reviews.
This one was spectacularly good though – top marks to the camera team though as I watched it a 3rd time because the scenery was so amazing!
You both gave the Honda S2000 great marks as well – money not being the deciding factor (and not needing extra seats) which would you choose for enjoyable driving?
Keep up the good work and, if possible, can you increase the rate of reviews?
This E46 was a 2002.
And these M3s were filmed around the Salt Lake City, Utah area. We were blessed to be on these great roads as the leaves were changing.
where was this M3 driving? Absolutely stunning mountain scenery!! I want to go there. I’m on east coast – so can’t take my car out to this road today!
Regarding the car- what year was this?
So glad you’re watching and using our TiVo feed! Thank you!
Looking forward to your verdict between the two…have driven them both on track and they are both very nice.
I watch your vids through TiVo on a 50″ flat plasma — keep up the great work guys!
