The Scion FRS (Or Subaru BRZ) has people excited about sportscars in a way normally reserved for crazy exotics. So we wanted to take it on a road trip worthy of its great driving feel, and decided on the Big Sur section of Pacific Coast Highway.

Of course, we didn’t want to ride together and knew there were a lot of other cars out there for the same cost as a new Scion FRS. Paul brought a brand new Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T. Todd couldn’t resist the Lotus Elise, especially since they are now available for less than $30k.

Along they way the guys took in the great scenery, darted past RVs, and debated all the other competition before settling on their favorites. They did agree on one thing, though: This stretch of road should be on everyone’s short list:

Maybe its just me.. but is there a video comparing the frs to the brz? I am on the market for one and just wanted to know which one is better with better detailed.

  3. why so he can get a bias review from chris harris this guy is such a fanboy troll and so bias

Yes, Chris Harris, who is probably the most respected car reviewer in the business today, is a fanboy troll and he’s biased… because he has a history of speaking glowingly about Subaru and/or Toyota. I’m sure a lot of people would agree with you.

You sound like someone who has already made up his mind about his next car purchase, so enjoy. Don’t let that chip on your shoulder get too big.

I really enjoy the reviews and videos you guys do and have been looking at an FRS/BRZ for a possible future purchase. Or maybe a used Porsche Cayman which, to date, is the most fun car I’ve ever driven in my life.

Anyway, thanks for the great show and keep doing what you do!

why so he can get a bias review from chris harris this guy is such a fanboy troll and so bias …. again frs is nice its just not the end all be all its way to expensive for what u get 27 grand for a 200 ph car thats only 300 pounds light than a z 13.8 hp per pound and the z 9.5 hp per pound ……….. and if u want a car that has his “super feel” go buy a z3mcoupe its better than the frs any day of the week and 10 grand cheaper 2 boot

    Great find motoringconbrio!!!

    Thank you so much, Paul

  7. To the person wanting to buy the Z— if it’s not too late, you may want to watch this first:

We did respond to this on YouTube, but we’re happy to discuss it here as well! Paul would take the M3 if life were more focused on commuting or long roadtrips, but he’d go FRS if there were going to be very many twisties, track, or fun drives. Todd would pick the Lotus Elise – he’s obsessed!

  9. Re-asking the following question here since I am genuinely curious: E46 M3, or one of these cars? :)

  10. Paul says:

    Thanks Justin!

Yeah, looks like I’ll be getting the 370Z. It’s a shame the FTS does not have more power – I agree with Todd’s comments on the video review (though Paul recons the FRS does not need any more power).

The 370Z has the power, great handling (maybe not as good as the FRS though), a much better interior and it looks good too.

The lack of Xenon lights in the FRS is a serious omission in my opinion too (the BRZ has them, not the FRS).

  11. Kevin says:

I would get the FR-S as well, especially after watching this.
Power won’t really be a problem cause that will keep me out of trouble. Thanks for the awesome reviews!

  12. justin says:

I gotta say go with the 370z its a shame they didnt bring it to this shootout ive driven both and own a 2010 370z and ive gotta say its not even a fair fight the z is buit to compete on even ground with a porsche cayman s and its it equil in evey way minus the badge and some refinement but in proformance there twins the frs is what 2700lbs with 200 hp and 150 torque the z is 3100lbs and 332 and 270 the frs 0-60 time is 6.5 and the z is 4.7 and its just gets worse the 1/4 mile is frs 14.9 vs 13.2 for the z the only reason u can slide a frs its it uses toyota prius tires for fuck sake the tires are like a brick and as slick as a used car salesman. if u put a decent set of tires on it could not even drift on ice and it dosent have the power to do jack …my wifes mini is faster and more fun no joke the fiat 500 abarth is just as quick the frs its not a fast or a quick car it does looks good .. but the z looks better has a much better interior handles much better if it was priced at 18 to 20 k then that might be something but at 26 to 29 thousand its a joke there are better and faster cars all day long its needs a big ass turbo and 300 hp to be a contender and if u are going to do that at 26k u might as well get a z no turbo needed

Thanks, but your iTunes podcast version has some prolonged freezes in the video track, starting at 1:03…

  14. David says:

Great Job, need to drive that road, I’ll take a E90 m3

  15. Paul says:

Great video and reviews (as always).

I’m buying a new car in the next few weeks and the FRS is top of the list – next to a Nissan 370Z. Just can’t seem to decide between the two…

  16. Bruce says:

Nice review. You guys must have been on PCH the same week I drove my FRS there.

California has some nice driver’s roads. I enjoyed my week there in the FRS.

    So does Utah :)
