Buick has a bad reputation in the US, but competes with Lexus throughout China. So, in GM’s attempt to remake itself in this country, they turned Europe’s Opel Insignia into the Buick Regal. And the hottest version of the Regal is this GS. Unfortunately, this car competes in the very competitive part of the market alongside the Audi A4, BMW 3 series, and many many more.

At a recent press event, we had the chance to drive a Regal GS through the Colorado Rockies. Unfortunately for us we had an automatic, and we only had the car for a couple of hours.

But in the end, this is a Buick worth talking about:

Thanks! Actually this was at Barker Res. in Nederland, CO and up toward Estes.

Great video… awesome photography. Was this Lake Granby you were on?

Thanks for the review. I have driven the GS, and then I bought one with the 6-speed manual. (You should do an update after you’ve driven the 6MT.) I think it’s a great car that deserves to compete against some of the other European and Japanese luxury/performance sedans.

You should note that the Epsilon II platform on the GS, the F40 6-speed manual transmission, and the EcoTec turbo engine all come from the last Saab 9-5. I drove a Saab for almost 20 years, and if one is accustomed to the 2-liter turbo/FWD combination, then the GS makes a lot of sense, perhaps more than a RWD car like the BMW. In fact, I think the the GS is the closest thing you can get to a new Saab with a warranty.

I thought your review was fair and accurate. I agree that the seats are very, very good. The car is quick, agile, and willing. I have not yet been able to induce torque steer. And, I think it looks better than the competition. Bottom line, I love driving my GS.

Thanks for so enjoying what we do, we really appreciate you being such a fan. Yes, this is the Opel Insignia, and we tagged the video with those words as well. Since the Insignia has been out for a while in Europe, and this is a different “hot-version” than the V6 you mention, we chose to focus on this as part of Buick remaking itself (and Buick has always offered rebadged cars from elsewhere in GMs stable). We definitely aren’t trying to ignore or slight the Opel origins.

After a hard week of work, on a friday night watching a new EDTV video while drinking a cool beer is one of the most pleasurable experiences a car guy can have. Great work – as always!

I’m only wondering why you haven’t mentioned that the Regal is originally an Opel Insignia from Europe? That’s why the seats feel so great and the materials and buttons are less “GM-ish”. The good news is: There is an AWD Version with more power called Insignia OPC. The bad news is: You won’t get it in America.

This car was never supposed to go against BMWs. It’s Opels answer to the VW Passat in Europe. And although it’s only a little worse, nobody buys it here. That’s the mystery of Opel: They build good cars at affordable prices, but somehow customers end up with a VW in their lot. As I do…

Thanks Richard, we really appreciate you saying that and being a fan. Fear not, we’re not going anywhere and we’re doing what we can to put out more videos.

I love your reviews of the vehicles you test. Really thought out and will be in the market for a new vehicle within a year and Buick is on my list. Although, I am looking for higher mileage vehicles such as the Verano and vehicles that have more utility such as hatchbacks. Tough call but will begin when I start looking next year. The Buicks I’ve seen recently look very nice for the price points. My family also owns a MINI and we’re not getting two German cars.

Once again you guys deliver a car review that makes me start wondering about a car I normally wouldn’t think about.

Please, please, please, keep up the good work!
