We are big fans of the GTI, so any promise of more power and performance in that car is something we can’t wait to toss down a canyon road. Europe has had the Golf R for a little while now, but we finally get a chance at it before the new Golf model shows up.

The Golf R carries on the tradition of the R32, and VW has aimed it directly at some of the best affordable AWDs available.  So the guys grabbed the R, a WRX, and an EVO X and headed to a favorite road to find the Golf R’s place in the world.

This is Part 1 of a 3 part comparison. The other two will follow shortly and in a few weeks you can watch all 3 un-cut and back to back right here!

What do you think of the Golf R? Would you buy one, and what would you cross-shop with this car?

“Would be good to get your take on the Ford Focus ST (will the RS come to the US) versus the GTI”

Would love to see an Focus ST review too. Shame they don’t offer a paddle shifter model (my wife can’t drive a manual).

It would be great if the US gets the next gen RS. The motoring analysts are saying we won’t – only European markets will get it. They believe Ford won’t want additional competition for the Mustang. Ford’s working on a much revised 2015 Mustang for the US though, which will hopefully be available mid 2014. Ford’s hinted it will look similar to their “Ford Evos” concept (do a google, great looking car).

Great call bringing a WRX and Evo MR to this party. Can’t wait for these reviews!

Great vid and review as always.

Sounds like the consensus is that the R is not worth the extra $, get a GTI instead? Would be good to get your take on the Ford Focus ST (will the RS come to the US) versus the GTI…..though maybe wait for the mk7 GTI. Great review as usual, having two reviewers give their opinion at the same time keeps the review interesting.

Another great video featuring a car I’ve always been hard-pressed to find in-depth info on.

I was told by my VW sales rep that the Golf R is faster than the GTI, but not that much faster. It is a little nicer on the inside, but not a LOT nicer. More or less that it’s for the diehard Golf GTI enthusiast who just cannot get enough, but people looking to get more out of their standard GTI will probably still be left wanting.

Your review pretty much confirmed my suspicions without being derisive or lowbrow. Thanks again for a great vid. I eagerly await the WRX/Evo comparisons.
